In this image from 1st July 1989, HRH Princess Alice of Gloucester can be seen visiting the Memorial Room of the Ulster Tower. Accompanying her is Sir Robert (Robin) George Caldwell Kinahan, ERD, Lord Lieutenant of Belfast.
Sir Robin had served during World War Two joining the royal Artillery, the 8th (Belfast) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, serving in France before the Dunkirk withdrawal. He then took part in the air defence of Coventry and London before ending up under General Slim in Burma.
Sir Robin a former MP, High Sheriff of Belfast, Lord Mayor of Belfast and senior member of the Orange Order had assisted the Somme Association in organising the rededication of the Ulster Memorial Tower in 1989.
